This is a repost of one of my own personal favorite photos in honor of the Day of the American Cowboy 2009.
This image was shot of Texas cowboy and star of Toughest Cowboy, Chad
Eubank and his fiancee Kim during a roundup of longhorn cattle on the
Beaumont Ranch in Grandview Texas...this yankee followed them on a golf
cart! It was a bitterly cold, rainy, dreary day...if you know me, that
would translate into a PERFECT DAY!
40 pro bull riders competed last night at the Fort Worth Stock Show. After dinner at Joe T. Garcia's what a better way to finish off a night in Fort Worth than with some bull riding?
I'll let the photos speak for themselves. It was the culmination of a week of cowboy 'stuff' for me. I can't seem to get enough of it.
The evening's top riders are introduced in dramatic fashion.
Bull riding action
One of the toughest jobs at the rodeo? Clowns!
This rider is in for a rough landing.
Thanks to photographer extraordinaire, Mark Stites for forcing me to reluctantly set my camera to manual mode! If not, I would have returned home with no usable photos as we were seated in the top row of the arena.
Chad invited me and photography buddy, Mark Stites to take photos of he, his fiancee Kim, and cowboy friend Tommy as they branded 60 head of cattle.
I returned home tired, dirty and sunburned.
I smelled like cow and burnt rawhide.
But in the end, this yankee had an experience he will never forget. I branded some cows, rode a gator, a horse and even wrangled a calf with my bare hands! ...I was able to snap a few photos too! I understand now why cowboys wear cowboy hats(Chad, Billy and Kim didn't get sunburned!) and it doesn't seem to matter what you walk in when wearing cowboy boots, unlike my Sketcher hiking boots!
Being a cowboy is hard, physical work, and I joke when I say I got to 'play cowboy'. Having seen Chad on his ranch before, I knew it could be an exhausting day. In reality, the cowboys did all the heavy lifting! It must feel good to feel this much accomplishment at the end of a day of hard work. Mark and I volunteered to put our cameras down to help work the ranch someday.
Trading Places One of the funniest moments yesterday was when Mark and I traded places with Chad and Tommy. We mounted the horses, then handed our D300's over to the cowboys so that they could take our photos. I wish I had a third camera to snap one incredible image of those two cowboys holding those cameras up to their eyes wearing cowboy hats and chaps, side-by-side. You can't ask for anything better than this!
Where you can find Chad The America's Toughest Cowboy season premier is January 29th. The show is on Thursdays at 11:00pm eastern time. Best of luck to Chad this season.
If you are in the Fort Worth area, you can watch Chad live at Bulls Night Out during the Fort Worth Stock Show next week. He will compete on Tuesday, January 20th and Wednesday, January 21st at 7:30pm.

This structure interested me, so I stopped to take some photos. It is a roadside honky tonk near Mansfield, Texas. While I was there a man drove up in this pickup truck and I told him I was just shooting some snapshots of this interesting building. He asked if I would like to see the inside. I love when this sort of thing happens! When I walked inside I felt like I was going back in time. I could imagine everyone getting all dolled-up on a Saturday night, parking their pickups outside and boot-scooting on the wooden dancefloor below the disco ball.
This cowboy portrait is of Rocky, one of the drovers of the famous Fort Worth Herd. Rocky and the other drovers lead the longhorns through the historic Fort Worth Stock Yards each day. For me, the best part of the drive is to follow the drovers back to the stables afterwards while they put the horses back in their stalls. The stables have unique light, are historic, plus they've got wild guinea hens who come for a visit!
I am available for portrait photography shoots at your choice of location, contact me to schedule your photo shoot.
This is one of the cowhands who drive the Fort Worth Herd through the historic Stock Yards area. These guys are all very friendly, but this one was very eager to have his photo taken, and allowed me to seat him in better light etc.
